Turtle Templates

The activities in the Turtle application are designed to complement and build on children’s experiences with using a floor turtle and on giving instructions that can be followed by a machine or a person. If you wish you could make a series of cards which follow a route and ask the children to move a counter to see where it goes.

Alien Invasion
The aliens are coming! Direct the ‘turtle’ spaceship to capture the other
spaceships by landing on them. Initially
just ask them to attack one spaceship,
then all of them.
Blank Screen

Here you can introduce children to the commands and let them experiment. Challenge them to draw a square, triangle or rectangle.
Britain
Children can fly the plane to anywhere
over Britain. Print off a copy of the
map and mark the place where you want them to go. They can then plot their
route before entering the information
on the computer.
Castle Treasure Hunt
Arriving at the castle children are given clues to where the treasure is hidden – in the dungeon, in the suit of armour etc. Children have to direct the knight to
the correct location to find the treasure.
Coral Reef Direct the dolphin through the coral reef maze to the pool. Avoid being eaten by
the shark or captured by the octopus!
Europe
Direct the plane to fly to Europe.
Can the children guess where France is?
Field
Complete a roundabout route eg. go
to the cottage to get the wheat,
take it to the mill to grind it, then back
to the cottage to bake the bread.
Flowers
Challenge the children to make the bee
fly to the flowers in a particular order.
Garden Maze
Guide the mouse through the garden
along the path, avoiding the grass.
Make a route to follow – print this off
and ask them to repeat it.
Goldilocks and the Three Bears
An ideal template to link with work
on fairy tales. Children can retell the
story as they move the turtle (Goldilocks) and plot their route at the same time.
Journey to Mars
Here children can plot a route to Mars, making sure they avoid obstacles on the way. This template can lead to investigations on comets, satellites,
planets and space travel.
Jungle Adventure
Archaeologists are looking for ancient
lost cities – help them plot their route,
then write postcards or reports about
their finds.
Mushroom Path
Follow the path and avoid being caught
by the mushrooms!
Don’t stray off the path.
Paint Pot Trail
Direct the turtle to a particular coloured
pot e.g. go to the red paint pot, then yellow, then blue. Change the paint colour (pen) as each pot of paint is reached.
Red Riding Hood
Help Little Red Riding Hood get to Grandma’s house without meeting
the wolf! You could collect flowers or
hide behind trees along the way.
Sahara Car Rally
Here a car is racing to finish the
Sahara car rally. There are various
routes it could take. Which is the longest? You could measure this using a piece or string or a ruler.

Spider’s Web
Here children have to direct the spider
so that she can complete her web.

Swallow’s Dinner Time
Help the swallow catch his supper.
Decide what is on the menu tonight – one, two or more flies.
Treasure Island
Where did Rascal Red, the notorious
pirate chief bury his treasure?
Choose a location on the map (hide it)
and then get the children to guess.
Turtle Voyage

The turtle’s eggs are hatching.
Can the baby turtle make it to the sea
in safety? Later, find out some more
facts about turtles.
Underground Maze
Can mole find the way to his
underground passage without running
into the fox’s lair on the way?
Turtle Village
What’s the shortest route to the
factory or church etc.
