Captain Crimson
Grammar/Spelling for Primary Schools
An exciting new software package aimed at encouraging children to improve
their writing by stimulating their interest through fictional characters
has been published by Logotron. It is set to extend pupils knowledge
of grammar, spelling and punctuation and to enrich their vocabulary.
The Look and Read: Captain Crimson software has been designed to complement
the BBC Schools TV series. It will both support the activities in the
TV programmes and create extra resources for teachers to use in class.
Thus reinforcing key language concepts and encouraging the development
of pupils IT capabilities in primary schools.
The on-screen activities are based around the weekly comic strip of the
fearless hero Captain Crimson and his adventures in space! The idea behind
the software is a formation of cartoon sequences placed in open-ended
contexts so children can pursue their own ideas within a particular scenario.
Most of the puzzles will allow the children to contribute their own ideas
using their imagination and by creating their own text. The software provides
an accessible way of combining words and graphics that can be easily edited
and presented. The Curriculum states that children will be given the opportunity
of maximising the potential of developing and applying their IT skills
in the study of English. The Captain Crimson software complies totally
with the IT curriculum at Key Stage 2.
There are seven activities to be explored, each with interactive button
controls releasing a brief description of each activity for completion.
Each will allow the user to access it by entering text and saving work.
These writing games include many imaginative features from Meet
the crew - identifying and characterising the ships crew; Unscramble
an adventure - involving children sequencing the story line in the
correct order; through to Action Stations - where children
have to write the mission instructions and imagine the type of conversations
the crew would hold together.
Each exciting, highly graphical and animated activity game will keep
the children focused, either as individuals or working together in a small
group. Also, each game has detailed instructions of how the software can
be extended to increase the level of difficulty for more able pupils.
