Zig Zag: The Vikings are Coming
Software that takes pupils 'back in time'during history lessons
The new edition in the series of Zig Zag software will be launched this
month. It is the latest accompaniment to the range of popular curriculum
based Acorn software published by Logotron in their joint venture with
the BBC.
Zig Zag: Vikings is a highly interactive software package for schools,
based on the Zig Zag BBC Schools TV programmes. Zig Zag provides a detailed
environment to immerse your pupils in real historical situations, featuring
different people and their civilisations. It will stimulate children's
interest and attention in history lessons dramatically.
Zig Zag: Vikings is set in the seaside village of 'Yorvik' and overall
the software provides the child with a detailed '3D' view of a typical
environment of the period. The pupils guide their animated character around
the complex entering different buildings and other locations to tackle
on-screen activities.
Example Task - 'Load Provisions on a Viking Ship' 'The ship is being
prepared for sail. You must complete the preparations. Place the remaining
cargo into the ships hold and then cover it up with planks. Then hoist
the sail and raise the anchor ready for sail' Children will learn keyboard
and mouse control and identifying objects
A popular TV series run on the BBC Schools education network, Zig Zag
concentrates on ensuring pupils receive an insight into both history and
geography topics and its format is ideal for Key Stage 2 children aged
7-9.
Zig Zag: Vikings offers both teachers and their pupils a fascinating
look and an introduction to a wealth of information on the topic. Written
and produced in conjunction with the BBC, ZIG ZAG provides a tried and
trusted teaching format for Key Stage 2.
Schools can expect to enjoy the following from each Zig Zag title: In
depth knowledge of an ancient civilisation that supports the Key Stage
2 History Curriculum Material to extend the learning initiated by the
Television series Activities and tasks based on the characters and themes
of the period Integrated topics that children can easily study and understandin
a way not available in books.
Each Zig Zag software title 'stands alone', i.e. children do not have
to have seen the BBC TV series to enjoy or understand the software. Zig
Zag is also available for the Anglo Saxons, the Greeks, the Romans, each
package including a user's guide with National Curriculum guidelines and
operating instructions, with extra ideas for in class project work on
each subject area.
