I started an online business in 2007 while I was working full-time as an auditor, and I ran the business as a side hustle for a year and a half before my business income was able to replace the income from my job. During that year and a half, my wife and I saved all of the money that I made from my business, and we used that as an emergency fund in case things didn't go as well as planned after leaving my job. If I had jumped into my business full-time right away, I'm afraid I would have given up about a year in and gone back to full-time employment.
